This course will provide you with a critical understanding of a wide range of business topics. Real life case studies will be used wherever possible to make it easier for you to relate to and apply your knowledge and skills developed throughout the course.

You will develop the knowledge and skills needed to analyse data, think critically about issues and make informed decisions. These skills compliment a range of other subject choices during your studies and are also essential to further study or employment.

During the course there will be opportunities to attend guest talks and take part in activities with industry experts.

Year one course content

There are six key themes in Year one:

  • What is Business?
  • Managers, Leadership and decision making
  • Marketing
  • Operational
  • Financial
  • Human resource management

Year two course content

There are four more detailed themes in Year two:

  • Analysing strategic position
  • Choosing a strategic direction
  • How to pursue strategies
  • Managing strategic change.

What does this course prepare me for?

It will provide you with the opportunity to develop the core specialist knowledge and understanding required in the business sector. Many students are particularly motivated by the subject matter and are planning on taking a business related course at university.

Course support and enrichment

During the course there will be opportunities to attend guest talks and take part in activities with industry experts.

This course is ideal for you if you are hard-working and interested in:

  • Manipulating data in a variety of forms
  • Presenting arguments and making judgements
  • Recognising the nature of problems and solving them
  • Challenging your own assumptions using evidence
Assessment

Students will be assessed internally on a regular basis, including through formal mock exams.

There are final exams at the end of the course in Year two.

Year two assessment:

  • Paper One – written exam (2 hours) multiple choice and short answer questions.
  • Paper Two – written exam (2 hours) a data response based on three case studies.
  • Paper Three – written exam (2 hours) one compulsory case study followed by six questions.
Entry requirements

Some of our subjects are subject to standard entry requirement and some have additional requirements. Please see below:

Subject specific entry requirements

  • 5 in Maths

Standard entry requirements

  • At least five GCSEs at grades 9-4 including English Language and Maths (one Vocational or Technical qualification at Merit or above may be counted)

AND

  • At least grade 4 (or Merit for Vocational or Technical qualifications) in any subject(s) that you have taken at GCSE and wish to continue studying at Level 3

AND

  • Average GCSE (best 8) of at least 4 (38 on the old points table)

AND

  • Grade 4 (or Merit), at least, in any subject previously studied
  • Students will take either 3 A-Level subjects or 1 Diploma subject with 1 A-Level
